AN HONEST NASHVILLE CRITICISM

I’ve talked about some frustrations with Nashville in a previous post. Nevertheless, I want to make a few more observations.

Last season, when they announced new showrunners, it was stated that a potential new season would have some changes, fixing some problems. After that, when CMT pick it up, they emphasized that the music would be the main storyline.

This never happened.

What was wrong with Nashville ABC:

-Political storylines:

Since the beggining, the Lamar storyline, then Teddy’s, about politics were the worst part of Nashville. In the end, they shut it down, with Teddy going to jail and Tendy going away.

-Maddie Conrad/Claybourne/Jaymes:

Maddie was a brat since season 1. The worst part was her emancipation storyline, which gave her even more screen time. Everything was just so wrong, the way she treated her boyfriend, the way she treated her father and mother, the way she sided with a completely crazy stranger. At least, in the end of season 4, they put an end in the whole thing.

-Too much soap:

This involves all the characters storylines.

In my opinion, I think the Juliette post-partum storyline could be better handled. I didn’t like the way her character lost all the growth. In the end of the season she redeemed herself though.

Crazy Layla was another problem. Sometimes she was good, sometimes she was a villain. They didn’t know what to do with her character, which was a shame, since I love her voice and her songs.

Gunnar and Scarlett were never in the same page. What I didn’t like in season 4 was the silly fights (like when they did an interview). In the end of the season, they decided to be together.

I think they fixed a lot of things by the end of season 4, maybe because they thought it was the end, but it gave the show the chance to start clean in another channel.

What is wrong with Nashville CMT:

-Rayna’s death:

I know it was the actress choice, but it sucks. Also, I didn’t like the way she died (the car crash). I think the stalker storyline was good and very real, so it would be ok for her to die because of it.

-Maddie again:

Maddie continued to be a brat and continued to have too much screen time.

-Daphne:

Now Daphne started to be a brat. I know her mother just died, but I don’t want to watch a show about two teenagers being difficult.

-Juliette doing nothing:

Juliette is recovering, ok. Then she started to make a gospel album, but we didn’t see the process at all. In fact, all we saw was her recording “On my way”. I wanted to see her writing, recording, having difficulties with the new genre… Moreover, she wasn’t in a lot of the episodes or had just a few scenes.

-Zack:

I wouldn’t mind him as just Rayna’s partner, but him and Will? Didn’t like at all. I loved Will with Kevin, and they didn’t give them a chance. Will’s confusion felt weird, after their season 4 finale.

-Gunnar and Scarlett:

I thought we were past this. Scarlett is unrecognizable to me. She has some issues, but, now, she is just unlikeable. She blamed Gunnar for all of their issues. Last season she realized she was in love with him and wanted to be with him. Then, suddenly, she feels numb about him? The worst was her relationship with Damien. Back at season 1, Scarlet was with Avery, but had a connection with Gunnar. We could clearly see how she had feelings for both. This time, though, it was all poorly written. We don’t see any feelings between them. Did she fell in love with him just because she thought his video was good and captured her inner self? Really? Even when they throw them down our throats, I didn’t feel any chemistry between them. Now, she is pregnant of him, but Gunnar wants to step in? Why?

-Reuse of previous storylines:

Crashes: Rayna was in a car crash in season 1 finale and almost died. Now, another car crash and her death. In addition, there was Juliette’s plane crash at the beginning of this season. Too many crashes.

Another baby/paternity storyline: This new Scarlett storyline is the worst. They just merged the Gunnar paternity storyline with Juliette pregnancy storyline. The first one was about a kid who Gunnar thought was his son, but end up being his brother. The second was Juliette’s unplanned pregnancy, and, like Scarlett, she didn’t know who the father was, but, fortunately, found out it was Avery’s.

Teenager brat: Like Maddie wasn’t enough, now Daphne is a brat.

-Lots of new character’s songs and fewer old characters songs: If you are paying attention, you saw that Clay and Hallie had a lot of songs in the first part of season 5, but Juliette and The Exes had ONE.

I will continue to watch the show, since I have hope it will get better, but I am a little disappointed with everything.

LIST: NASHVILLE’S SEASON 5 BEST SONGS (SO FAR)

While we have to wait for Nashville to come back, I made a list, ranking the best songs from Season 5 so far. It’s always hard to choose one over another, but I’ve tried my best.

Here we go:

10) BURN TO DARK (Feat. Chris Carmack)

A beautiful song about love and still longing for the person you just lost. I think, it’s too short though. I kept waiting for more.

09) ON MY WAY (Feat. Hayden Panettiere & Jonathan Jackson)

A great rendition from Hayden, her voice is very soft and emotional. The song is about trying to be on the right track, but not being quite there yet.

08) YOU’RE MINE (Feat. Connie Britton, Hayden Panettiere, Jonathan Jackson, Chris Carmack, Clare Bowen, Sam Palladio, Lennon & Maisy, Charles Esten)

I loved this song and how everybody sang in it. The vocals merged together in a beautiful way. I just wish the song was more extensive.

07) MY FAVORITE HURRICANE (Feat. Connie Britton and Charles Esten)

This song is one of the delightful Rayna and Deacon’s duets. It has a certain torment in the lyrics, a love with pain, and the vocals show us exactly that.

06) SIMPLE AS THAT ( Feat. Charles Esten)

How great is Charles Esten? When the song started, I didn’t know what to expect, but, as it progressed, I really enjoyed. The chorus is adoring. Very sweet.

05) WIDE OPEN (Feat. Will Chase)

I miss Will Chase! And this song made me desire him back even more. This music is so country, the chorus addictive, his voice amazing as always. I hear this all the time.

04) CAN’T REMEMBER NEVER LOVING YOU (Feat. Connie Britton and Charles Esten)

Another amazing duet from them. This one is more upbeat and the lyrics are very romantic. A true love letter.

03) ALREADY GONE (Feat. Connie Britton)

I wanted this song since season one! I loved when Rayna first played and it was worth the wait. I am very hooked!

02) ALL OF ME (Feat. Clare Bowen and Sam Palladio)

I love The Exes songs. I think their voices are perfect together and they have an intimacy that is just amazing. I don’t know if I prefer the normal version of the song or the Bluebird Set, but I think the later is more their style (it is also the one which the lyrics says “blue eyes” instead of “golden eyes”.

01) SANCTUARY (Feat. Charles Esten and Lennon & Maisy)

This song has beautiful lyrics and it was sung on the most emotional episode of Nashville. I had goosebumps with the performance. Simply AMAZING.

CONCLUSION:

We have some great songs this year, but something has bothered me a lot. I don’t understand why they recorded so many songs from the new characters (Hallie and Clay) and just one song from Clare Bowen & Sam Palladio and Hayden Panettiere. I personally didn’t like the new characters’ songs very much (none of them made the cut).

But what about you guys? Which songs are your favorites so far?

WHY DO TV SHOWS HATE ME? – NASHVILLE

Nashville has struggled with some of its storylines since the beginning, but it has always been one of my favorite TV shows, for its focus on the country music industry, great songs from the actors, plus, it is very entertaining.

For that, when they announced the cancelation, I joined all the other fans for the #bringbacknashville campaign. After CMT pick it up, they promised season 5 would be even better than the previous seasons, that all the problems that the show had would be fixed. What did they promised?

1- More music

2- Less soap opera storylines

3- More focus on the problems that artists face in the industry

Unfortunately,  they didn’t deliver any of that. It has until now, less music (only one song from Clare Bowen and Sam  Palladio and only one song from Hayden Panettiere), they have not only continued the soap opera, but repeated stories from the previous seasons (another car crash? Another unwanted pregnancy? Really?). They also seems to ignore some things from the past seasons, like Maddie’s emancipation, or how Scarlett had just realized that she was in love with Gunnar.

Nonetheless, Rayna’s death was a slap in the fan’s faces. Rayna was the lead character of the show, she was one half of Dayna and everyone waited four years to see her and Deacon together. The fact that she died because of a car crash made things even worse. She was in a car crash in the first season finale and it seems a little too much to put her in another one, especially after this season’s plane crash.

Besides that, if Connie Britton was leaving, they should’ve told the fans, principally after the information leaked. Instead, they’ve denied, over and over again.

In my opinion, I think, since the show was moving to another channel, that they should’ve recast Rayna. It would be odd at first, but plenty of shows had done that, and Rayna was too important to die.

So, Nashville, why do you hate me?
